Masters II vs Bayswater

Hamersley Rovers 2 v 4 Bayswater

On reflection, this game will have to go down as an opportunity missed for our first win of the season.

Once again a strong Rovers squad assembled roughly on time and the much publicised Coach vs Captain spat was set aside for the game.  Unfortunately, this weeks match reporter was unable to shake off a flu that would have seen lesser men dialling 000.  As punishment for his 'softness', he was given the whistle and asked to even things up for the injustices received against Quinns.

Peeeeep...

As usual, Rovers got straight into the groove and after a 5 minute period of allowing Bayswater to totally dominate possession, we allowed them a little extra space (1/4 of the pitch) to put in a cross and pick out an unmarked man at the back post, 1-0 down.

Once we had given the opposition our welcome gift, we actually started to get hold of the ball and began to offer them some serious competition.  In fact, we had a golden chance to level the game before half time when Paul was put through (great ball), he shrugged off the defender and then proceeded to delicately smash the ball over the keeper, the bar, the next pitch and into the Carine Swamp.  We went into the break only a goal down.

Come the second half we were full of confidence that the game could be turned around and we would record our first win.  Unfortunately, it was not to be as we were to concede a further 3 goals (one of which was a penalty - sorry Russ).

We were however able to score two good team goals with the final touches both coming from the boot of Paul, who reverted to his usual style of slotting the ball in the bottom corner.

From the ref's point of view, it was great to see that this Rovers side were able to compete in every area of the pitch and not one player took a backward step.   It seems that players are growing in confidence and we are creating more chances each week and playing more of the game in the oppositions half.

If we can somehow limit the amount of easy goals we give away and improve the accuracy of our passing a little more, then the first win will not be far away....let's make it this Sunday !
