Masters II vs Perth Hills

Hamersley 1 Perth Hills 4

Expectations were high in the Hamersley camp following our first win at Ellenbrook the week before. A full squad of 16 was assembled, with plenty of firepower on the bench. A cool, overcast day was ideal, but unfortunately the mudheap that passes for the far pitch at Carine wasn’t. We then proceeded to play like pigs in mud! Giving the ball away with regularity, and failing to support the man with the ball. Perth Hills move well as a team, get men over to the flanks, and get forward quickly – we knew that from last time, but were still unable to cope. They were good value for a 2- 0 half time lead.

The second half was better, Gys was strong with his hands in goal and quick out, the back line pushed forward, and Mark and Nigel got on top in midfield. Paul made some strong runs out to the left, but their defence was suprisingly adept. When he moved more centrally, he got on the end of a through ball, and finished sweetly to put us back in the game at 2-1. It felt like we had the momentum, but we weren’t able to capitalise. With 20 minutes left, they got a soft third from a shot that crept in the near post, and a late fourth when the zip had gone out of our game. Special mention to Jas, who has trained and played well in midfield when given his chance in the outfield over the last few weeks.

Next week it’s away at Westside – another 'can win, should win, must win' game.
