Masters I Go Top

Masters 1 had been waiting for the top of the table (that's ladder for you aussies) clash with rivals ECU and desperate for a win to get in front in the title race.

Roberto Kennedy shuffled his pack and was boosted by AIDS delaying going back to work to play in the big one. Rovers lined up in their now familiar 3-5-2, or is it 5-3-2, or 3-4-1-2 or the good old fashioned xmas tree formation. Shay "top of the morning" Griffen in goal

A back 3 of Steadfast Taylor, released from babysitting duties, Hoddle, looking to add more to his goals of the season collection and women's textile guru, Pine Clark.

The midfield had a youthful look about it with Russ, Andy, Craig, Scott and Matt ready to do all the running

Up front was AIDS and Lee-ds. On the bench was the manager, Micky Hazard Scannell, Pat, Dave "Gus" Ceasar and John Doubtfire.

Credit to John for turning up he'd had a very busy morning running a hoover round the house, ironing the clothes, doing the dishes and getting Sunday dinner ready.

Not available for selection were Elton Courcha who was on a float in the Bali Mardi Gras. Scottish Dave, Calf McGough (believed to be painting), Aaron (back to his tampon rotation) and Gay Mills.

The game started lively with ECU throwing themselves about but with few chances created for either side, then AIDS broke free in the box only to be rugby tackled for a clear penalty. Matt stepped up to stroke it home, injuring himself in the celebration and being replaced by Pat.

Challenges were going in all over the pitch and the ref let too many hefty ones go, then the ball broke free on the edge of the ECU box, Lee-ds latched onto it and slotted it under the keeper for 2-0. The travelling support were very quiet, then from a corner the slimmest bloke on the pitch headed past Shay, Dave Ridgeway watching from the side offered him some of his tikka masala to which the ECU player gave a 2 fingered reply, I think he asked for poppadums, anyway it earned him a yellow.

Buoyed by their goal, ECU carried on diving into tackles. Hoddle had some handbags and drew some claret after giving the lairy ECU forward a dry slap, which was thoroughly deserved. The whistle blew and the lads came out for the 2nd half, Rovers were under the cosh. Russ looked sleepy and made way for the manager to make a cameo appearance, word up.

Roberto made the most of a waist high challenge and a 2nd yellow was dished out to the ECU player. Pines knees started creaking and he was replaced by Dave "Gus" Ceasar. Rovers were now bossing the game, Lee-ds looking lively and in good form, he recorded a 147 at work on Thursday night.

Scotty did his best to have his leg broken but somehow survived the assault, the ECU 'player' receiving a 2nd yellow which was a bit harsh as he should have received a straight red in the 10th minute. Now Rovers could go for the kill, Hoddle made way for young Scannell in his 1st masters season to come on and inject some pace and change the formation.

The ball pinged around ECU's box and there was Pat from all of 400mm to drive a left foot shot home. This more than made amends for a few early season mishaps and if he carries on playing like this Amateur Div 5 may offer him a contract.

Soon it was 4, Craig netting like his namesake and idol Craig Johnston in the '86 FA cup final. ECU were beaten and didnt even manage to pick up another yellow card for the rest of the game.

Now the real stuff begins as nothing less than maximum point will secure Hamersley the title, or is it a flag? Whats a flag anyway?
