Rovers Win Interstate Challange

19 October 2012
Hamersley Rovers took up the invitation to play in an inaugural Interstate Challange Cup between Western Australia and South Australia. Premier League winner Joondalup United turned down the opportunity so Rovers stepped in after finishing second in the league.
The Challange Cup was between Womens, Amateurs and Semi-Professional teams with Beckenham Angels and Sorrento also representing WA on the day. The winning state would decided on the results of the three games combined. Hamersley took on International SC an amateur club from Mt Gambier with an impressive season record.
After Beckenham Angels lost the opener it was up to Hamersley to get WA back on even terms. Despite an early set back, Rovers soon asserted authority on the game and were soon back on terms before going ahead. A great free-kick to James Young made it 3-1 at half time and seemingly cruising.
International came out second half with more purpose and hit the bar twice before finding the back of the net. Rovers were not playing as well as they had in the first half but were still creating numerous chances and also missed a penalty. International had a good chance to equalise at the death but Rovers heald on to secure the win 3-2.
A great day and hopefully the club can go one better in the Premier League and earn the right to travel to Adelaide next year to represent WA.
