Pride Intact as Rovers Bow Out

Hamersley Rovers have bowed out of the State Cup on penalties to State League Division 1 side Gosnells City after the sides couldn't be separated during 120 minutes of play, the match ending 2-2.

Rovers have a good pedigree in the State Cup in recent years making the Semi-Final in 2008 and the Quarter-Finals last year. A tough first up away tie was going to make a repeat of these runs a difficult prospect.

The game was played at Hartfield Park in Forrestfield as Gosnells home ground was unavailable. In hot conditions Rovers opened the scoring with debutant Danny Fowler tapping in after a scramble in the box.

Gosnells had a bit more of the ball and made their possession count with two goals in quick succession giving them a 2-1 lead. Just before half-time Stu Simmons was released down the left and with the defence standing off he unleashed a thunderous left foot shot into the bottom corner.

Despite some guilt edged chances, some very tired legs in the heat was taking it's toll on both teams. it was a fairly even contest during extra time but with neither team able to convert it's chances it was onto penalties.

Gosnells were clinical from the sport while Hamersley's tired legs saw two misses from the five taken. Rovers Reserves also went out losing 2-1 after normal time with the goal coming from Mickey Garcia.

The teams put in a huge effort against opponents two divisions higher and can hold their heads high.
